W.O.W - Word of the Week.

Every industry has its own jargon, including the specialty coffee industry. This week’s coffee word of the week is: mélange.

According to Miriam Webster online, mé·lange is pronounced mā -ˈlänj and means a mixture of different things. In the coffee industry, it is a way of blending coffee. When you see that is coffee mélange roasted, it means that each coffee varietal is roasted separately and blended post roasting. We mélange roast all of our blends with the exception of the SM “Funky” Monkey Espresso Blend. For the Bonney Lake Blend, we roast the Brazil coffee separate from the Guatemala separate from the Rwanda. So, each coffee is roasted on its own and blended all together in the correct proportions after roasting and cooling. This gives us the ability to roast each coffee to bring out its own amazing flavors to highlight, accentuate or compliment the other coffees in the mélange roasting (blending really). Our SM “Funky” Monkey Espresso Blend is a blend of green coffee from our supplier, Coffee Shrub/Sweet Maria’s. It is blended prior to roasting.

As we work on our seasonal blends and our own proprietary blend for espresso, we will continue to mélange blend. We like the control it gives us over flavor. Now you know what that means when you see it on a coffee bag like this one:
